The main objective of Social Studies is to raise good citizens who are aware of the social problems and needs, conscious of protecting the environment, devoted to their families, their nation and country. 

 

OBJECTIVIES:

 

The main objective of Social Studies is to raise good citizens who are aware of the social problems and needs, conscious of protecting the environment, devoted to their families, their nation and country. They acquire good understanding of Atatürk’s revolutions and principles and essential skills and attitudes for democratic life.

It is critical to teach the students analyzing the data related to history, geography, religion and economics so they are able to establish a relation between reason and result. They need to gain knowledge, skills and values that help them to get adapted to social life.

 

PROGRAM:

In the new curriculum of Social Studies, the learning goals are achieved through seven units. In grades 6-8, the same units are covered in different dimension and depth. The units are; I Learn about Social Studies, Life on Earth, The Sources of our Country, Our Country and World ,Culture and Values, The Adventure of Democracy, High Technology and our Century. Through these units students learn about individual and society, different features and landscape of their country. They also learn about the governance, our responsibilities, public opinion, production of goods, being a good consumer, global issues and their own traditions, culture.

 

Our approach is to encourage our students’ creativity and critical thinking. Planning is done to provide students an active role, participating in group work and discussions. They are not expected to accumulate information as it is but discover it. Computer assistant lessons and inter disciplinary projects important components of the subject.

 

 

ACTIVITIES:

Social Studies department leads some cross curricular activities. They have a traditional “Journey to History” fair in which students share some belongings of their family which has either historical or cultural value. The department also sponsors Model United Nations (MUN) Club.
