In our English lessons with our Grade 4 students, we explored “The Solar System” unit over a five-week period in line with the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology.
Within the scope of this unit, our students developed their English language skills while studying topics such as the characteristics of the planets, the movements of the Earth and the Moon, the formation of the seasons, the functions of observatories, satellites, and space exploration. In order to support the learning process and provide students with opportunities to actively use the language structures and vocabulary they had learned, we organized an educational field trip. Through this experience, we aimed to nurture our students’ scientific curiosity while enabling them to use English in an authentic, real-life context.
During the trip, students explored Newton’s three laws of motion through hands-on activities, observed gravity experiments related to the Moon, and participated in studies focusing on movement and sports in space. They examined space suits up close and learned about methods of growing plants in space and hydroponic systems. In addition, students took part in a Mars-themed interactive exhibition tour, conducted engaging scientific experiments, and had the opportunity to experience mission systems through simulator demonstrations.
