Our Grade 3 students’ interdisciplinary project, “Listening to the City’s Voice: Stories of İzmir,” offered an engaging and educational learning journey centered on İzmir’s cultural heritage. Implemented across Turkish Language Arts, Visual Arts, Library, and Mathematics lessons, the project encouraged students to research, question, write, and express their creativity through original stories.
Throughout the project, our students explored both the tangible and intangible elements that shape İzmir’s rich cultural heritage. The Clock Tower, the Historic Elevator, gevrek, boyoz, and the Levantine Mansions were among the key focal points of our studies. Enriched by guest speakers, cookie workshops, and mansion visits, the learning experiences became multidimensional and deeply meaningful.
Through this project, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals—specifically Sustainable Cities and Communities—we aimed to support our students in recognizing the cultural heritage of the city they live in and in developing a sense of responsibility to preserve it.
The parent-inclusive final event, featuring a collaborative workshop with students and parents, served as a wonderful example of how learning grows through sharing. In this meaningful experience that connected İzmir’s past with its present, we came together with our parents at the museum and collectively experienced the value of exploring, reflecting, and creating together in an environment shaped by knowledge.
We extend our sincere thanks to all our teachers, students, and valued parents who contributed to the success of this project.
